Navigating the NDIS on the Sunshine Coast: Support and Resources
If you’re living on the Sunshine Coast and navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), you’re not alone. Whether you’re new to the NDIS or already have a plan in place, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what support is available—especially if you or your loved one is autistic.
At Hively Health, we’re here to help make that process a little easier. We believe everyone deserves access to the right tools, therapies, and guidance to live a full and empowered life.
What is the NDIS?
The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) provides funding to people with disability to access the services and supports they need. If you have a permanent and significant disability, including autism, the NDIS can help you achieve your goals in areas like education, work, social participation, independence, and health.
On the Sunshine Coast, there are a range of registered providers, therapists, support workers and community organisations who deliver NDIS-funded services to locals of all ages.
Sunshine Coast Resources for Autism
For families and individuals with autism, the Sunshine Coast offers a variety of helpful supports:
Autism-Specific Therapies and Support Services
-
Positive Behaviour Support (like our services at Hively Health) can help individuals develop emotional regulation, communication, and social skills.
-
Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Psychology Services are widely available and can be included in NDIS plans.
-
Local autism organisations, such as Speld, offer early intervention and educational support for young children with autism.
NDIS Local Area Coordinators (LACs)
Sunshine Coast has dedicated LACs, such as Carers Queensland and BUSHKids, who help you understand your plan and connect with providers.
Inclusive Community Programs
Look for NDIS-funded programs like art therapy, horse riding, sensory-friendly playgroups, and youth mentoring through local centres including Sunshine Butterflies, STEPS, and other inclusive support activities and programs.
Education and Parent Resources
-
The Autism Hub Queensland offers webinars, toolkits, and school resources.
-
Many Sunshine Coast schools have support teams and inclusion staff who work alongside families to support autistic students including Palmview State Special School and Currimundi Special School.
How Positive Behaviour Support Can Help
For individuals with autism, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a powerful, person-centred approach to improving quality of life by reducing behaviours of concern and building positive skills.
At Hively Health, our PBS practitioners on the Sunshine Coast work closely with individuals, families, schools, and support teams to:
-
Understand the why behind challenging behaviours
-
Develop strategies to promote independence, communication, and wellbeing
-
Create Positive Behaviour Support Plans that align with NDIS goals
We’re proud to be part of the local Sunshine Coast community and to support individuals and families across Caloundra, Maroochydore, Noosa, and beyond.
