ADHD in Children
Our Clinic
Our dedicated Hively Bumblebees paediatric space at our East Brisbane clinic is designed to help children feel calm, safe, and engaged during therapy. The environment is warm and imaginative, featuring a magical tree, fairy mushrooms, butterflies, and ladybeetles that make the experience friendly and inviting.
To support emotional regulation and comfort, the clinic includes sensory lighting, crash mats, textured rugs, and a soft KloudSac. Our extensive resource library features sensory and fidget tools, games, books, plush toys, and more, creating a space where children can relax, focus, and feel at ease while we work together to understand their needs.
What ADHD Can Look Like in Children
ADHD can present in different ways depending on a child’s age, personality, and environment.
ADHD can look different for every child. Some may be constantly on the move, find it hard to sit still in class, or lose focus halfway through a task. Others might seem quiet and dreamy, yet struggle to follow instructions or stay organised. Emotional outbursts, forgetfulness, or difficulty keeping friendships can also be signs that a child is finding things harder than they appear.
Because every child’s experience is unique, a professional ADHD assessment can help families understand what’s really happening, bringing clarity, compassion, and the right support at the right time.
Common signs of ADHD in children may include:
Difficulty Focusing
Easily Distracted
Difficulty Organizing Tasks
Mind Seems Elsewhere
Time Blindness
Trouble Following Instructions
Losing Items Frequently
Avoids Difficult Tasks
Fidgets or Stims
Feeling Restless
Constant Movement
Talking Excessively
Difficulty Waiting
Interrupts or Intrudes
Acting Impulsively
Emotional Overwhelm
Low Frustration Tolerance
Difficulty Relaxing
Why Early Identification Matters
Understanding the signs of ADHD in your child early can completely change their trajectory. With early assessment and intervention, families can:
- Access school supports or learning accommodations
- Build emotional regulation and self-awareness
- Prevent anxiety, frustration, or self-esteem issues
- Strengthen relationships at home and school
- Empower children with practical strategies that work for them
A timely diagnosis doesn’t just explain what’s happening, it gives you the tools to create a calmer, more supportive environment for your child to thrive.
Our ADHD Assessment Process for Children
At Hively Health, we understand that beginning an ADHD assessment can feel both relieving and overwhelming. We aim to make the process relaxed and positive for every family.
1. Parent Intake Session
A discussion with parents or carers to discuss developmental history, current challenges, and family goals.
2. Child Assessment Session
A child-friendly session that may include play-based and standardised activities exploring attention, focus, and executive functioning.
3. Questionnaires (Parents & Teachers)
Tools such as Conners or Vanderbilt rating scales help build a full picture of how your child experiences the world across settings.
4. Scoring and Report Preparation
Your psychologist reviews all data and prepares a detailed, easy-to-understand report summarising findings, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations.
5. Parent Feedback Session
Parents meet with the psychologist to review the report, discuss results, and plan next steps for school, home, and therapy.
For formal diagnosis of ADHD in children, reports can be verified by a paediatrician or child psychiatrist.
Additional Support Options
Additional Assessments are available to provide a deeper understanding and tailored support. These include a IQ & Cognitive, Learning & Memory, and Functional Behaviour Assessments.
We can also provide a comprehensive NDIS support letter to assist with funding and service access, as well as observations (if required) to gain insights into how ADHD symptoms appear in daily life.
